Dental Crowns
What are Crowns?
A dental crown is a protective cap placed over a damaged or weakened tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns can be made from various materials, including gold, porcelain fused to high noble metals, zirconia, stainless steel, and Emax (a high-strength ceramic).
The Process:
Preparation: The tooth is reshaped to accommodate the crown. Any decay is removed, and the tooth is reinforced, if necessary, with a buildup material.
Impressions: Digital or physical impressions are taken to create a custom-fit crown.
Temporary restoration: A temporary crown would be placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is made by the lab.
Crown Placement: Once the custom crown is ready, it is carefully fitted and bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Adjustments are made to ensure proper alignment and bite.
Indications:
Teeth weakened by large fillings or decay
Fractured or broken teeth
Teeth treated with root canals
Severely discolored or misshapen teeth
To support a dental bridge
Contraindications:
Teeth with insufficient structure to support a crown
Active gum disease or untreated oral infections
The Problem It Solves:
Crowns protect and restore functionality to damaged teeth, preventing further deterioration and improving aesthetics.
Pros:
Durable and long-lasting (5-15+ years depending on material)
Restores strength and appearance
Customizable to match natural teeth
Cons:
Requires tooth reshaping
Higher cost compared to fillings
Temporary sensitivity after placement
